How do you view your work and money? In a good light or are both more of a struggle?
I’m going to highlight a different way of thinking about work and money today. One I believe many people don’t see.
Where work is play, and money feels joyous, not a heavy weight.
I know for myself I did not view money and work in this way up until recently – I have spent the last few years rewriting this story and perception in my subconscious – cause darn is it a much better one!
To start: this is the belief I believe many people still have:
– go to work, doing something you don’t enjoy to pay the bills. And anytime someone outside of the work environment tries and offers something – oh they just want my money or its a scam.
This is not a healthy way to view work and money.
( don’t get me wrong there are plenty of scams and crumby people who do actually do this, unfortunately )
However – what if it looks a little more like this.
Within a group of friends each friend figured out what they love to do. The thing that brings them so much joy and lights them up. Maybe for one friend its kayaking, another is basket weaving, and another hula hooping.
Now here’s the shift – what would it look like if instead of trading our time for money doing something we don’t like day in and out – that circulation of money occurred from paying your friend to take you on a kayaking tour, buying a basket your other friend weaved, accepting payment from those two friends as you teach them how to hula hoop.
How does this view of work and money feel like?
This is a very minute version of the bigger picture here, but that kind of money circulation sounds a heck of a lot better to me than the first one!
I imagine it does for you too.
I think its important to remember that ‘all these people trying to sell us stuff’ are just like you and me – trying to make a buck to live. They just happen to be choosing to make that buck selling whatever item they are.
How we receive that ‘sales pitch’ is up to us. We can either get angry by it, or realize that person is merely trying to make a living.
Now that I’ve been in the sales section of my career for a few years now – I can say from experience it takes a tremendous amount of courage and vulnerability to offer your gift out to the world.
My main point here however is the shift in perspective around how money is exchanged in our world today.
There are too many people doing work they dont enjoy – and not enough people doing work they love. And there’s too much backlash when a person does start asking for payment sharing the thing that brings them joy.
Lets cheer each other on and say ‘heck ya Susie! How many people where you able to show the beauty of kayaking to today?!
The feeling of being able to pay your friend for their service that you know comes from their heart that brings them joy – is priceless.
A totally different way to view work and money. Work doesn’t have to be something that sucks. Money doesn’t have to be a dirty subject.
So I opt for – encouraging each other to do what we love – and cheer each other on as we break through all the limiting beliefs that come up as we learn its okay to receive payment for offering our services to others.
How do you view money and work now? The same or different?
